How is your company advancing autonomous vehicles? 

Torc Robotics, an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck, is at the forefront of transforming the freight industry by developing a comprehensive self-driving vehicle software and integration solution. The company is dedicated to commercializing autonomous trucks for U.S. long-haul operations, with a targeted deployment by 2027.

As the world’s leading autonomous trucking solution, Torc focuses on delivering a hub-to-hub product that is not only safe and reliable but also cost-effective and scalable. Torc is building a strong business model grounded in deep collaboration with customers. The company is committed to developing a solution that balances innovation with practical application, meeting customer needs while scaling efficiently to address the complexities of the freight industry. 

In October 2024, Torc reached a pivotal milestone, completing fully autonomous test runs without a driver in a multi-lane, closed-course environment. Conducted at speeds up to 65 mph, these tests showcased the system's ability to navigate safely and efficiently at highway speeds, reinforcing its readiness for real-world deployment. This achievement not only underscores the technological maturity of Torc's solution but marks a key step toward the realization of safer, more efficient transportation for long-haul trucking. 

What’s an example of a challenge your company is trying to solve for? 

Advancing Safety in Freight 

One of the most pressing challenges in the trucking and transportation industry is improving safety on the roads. With nearly 42,000 traffic deaths annually in the U.S., safety is a critical issue in trucking and transportation. Torc Robotics is tackling this challenge head-on with autonomous driving technology that prioritizes safety at every level.

Torc’s vision is to significantly reduce accidents caused by human error, such as fatigue and distraction, which are major contributors to roadway fatalities in the U.S. Autonomous trucks can operate safely and efficiently, while not being at risk of driving impaired, distracted, or fatigued. With a combination of advanced sensing, software, and machine learning technologies, Torc can help address the roadway safety challenge with its innovative technologies and approach to vehicle safety.

Torc is also engaging first responders (e.g., law enforcement, fire, EMS) to provide training and to collaborate on safe and effective interactions when encountering our trucks on public roads. By developing cutting-edge autonomous systems, Torc addresses growing challenges in the trucking industry, such as projected increases in freight traffic, challenges in driver retention and recruiting for long-haul operations, operational inefficiencies, and safety risks. Its innovation not only leads the way for safer, more reliable operations but also inspires new standards and practices that elevate the entire freight market.

What policy solutions are most important for your company? 

For Torc Robotics, establishing a clear and cohesive policy framework is essential to advancing and deploying autonomous trucks. A comprehensive federal framework is paramount, as it would detail how existing regulations apply to AVs and establish a clear pathway for their deployment. The U.S. Department of Transportation has recognized the importance of such a framework, emphasizing the need for consistent national policies to facilitate the safe integration of AVs into the transportation system. 

Complementing federal efforts, state policy frameworks play a crucial role in the safe testing and commercializing of autonomous fleets. States are responsible for vehicle licensing, registration, traffic laws and enforcement. A cohesive regulatory environment can be created by aligning state policies with federal guidelines, fostering innovation while ensuring public safety. This integrated approach is vital for successfully integrating autonomous fleets into the nation's transportation infrastructure. 

Why is your company a member of AVIA? 

Torc Robotics is a member of the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) because it believes that industry collaboration is critical to safely introducing autonomous trucking. AVIA provides a forum for sharing information on important Federal and state policies relevant for the autonomous vehicle industry. It also allows the industry to collaborate on key initiatives, such as law enforcement engagement and public education.

By engaging in these collaborative efforts, Torc not only enhances its own industry knowledge but also contributes to the broader goal of creating safer, more efficient transportation for all.
