New Report: AV Industry Surges Past 145 Million Autonomous Miles as AVIA Urges Policymakers to Act

WASHINGTON–-Today, the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) released its second annual State of AV report, the organization’s flagship resource on autonomous vehicle (AV) deployment, safety, and economic impact across the United States.

The 2025 report highlights the major progress by AVIA members, the nation’s leading AV developers, including more than 145 million autonomous miles driven on U.S. public roads and commercial deployments spanning robotaxis, zero-occupancy vehicles, and long-haul  trucks. 145 million autonomous miles driven on U.S. public roads represents more than double the number of miles since AVIA last reported the data in April 2024.This year’s report features new data, firsthand insights from AVIA member CEOs, and case studies from leading states.

“AVIA is excited to share this year’s State of AV report, which highlights the growth of this innovative industry as our members continue to responsibly deploy autonomous vehicles,” said AVIA CEO Jeff Farrah. “AVs are operating safely every day in communities and on highways across the country, proving they can deliver on the promise of safer roads, enhanced mobility, and stronger supply chains. The United States has led the world in developing this technology, and as State of AV highlights, we can continue that momentum if lawmakers and policymakers in Washington work to develop a federal policy framework for AVs.”

The report arrives at a pivotal moment. While state governments have led the way on AV deployment, the absence of a federal framework remains a top challenge cited by AV company leaders. More than 93% of AVIA member CEOs interviewed for the report said that federal policy action is the most important step to support continued progress.

State of AV outlines the urgent need for national leadership and calls attention to AVIA’s federal policy roadmap, Securing American Leadership in Autonomous Vehicles.

The report also documents the AV industry’s growing economic footprint, with deployments expanding in rural and urban areas alike, and job creation spanning technical and non-technical roles. Autonomous vehicles are already enhancing access to transportation for people with disabilities and aging Americans, supporting American manufacturing, and reducing the risk of human-caused roadway fatalities.
