AV Industry Statement on NHTSA's Data Release from the Standing General Order
Washington, DC - The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) released a statement following NHTSA's release of driver-assist and autonomous vehicle data from its Standing General Order:
“The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association’s members are committed to realizing the transformational opportunity for autonomous vehicles (AVs) to improve safety on America’s roads. The data released by NHTSA confirms the strong safety record of AV technology and its testing and deployment procedures, and we appreciate that this report clearly delineates between AVs and driver-assist as distinct technologies,” said Ariel Wolf, general counsel to AVIA.
“Last year 42,915 people died in motor vehicle crashes, a 10.5% increase from the previous year. We are continuing to assess the data and agree with NHTSA's statement that policymakers and the public should be judicious when drawing conclusions. The AV industry will continue to work with NHTSA collaboratively and transparently to improve the public’s understanding of AV technology.”
