AVIA Joins the Governors Highway Safety Association
Safety has always been at the heart of our mission.
AVIA has championed the safe and timely deployment of autonomous vehicles (AVs). We believe that the AV industry must earn and maintain public trust and that AVs will deliver safer roads for all.
The urgency has never been clearer. Nearly 40,000 people died in crashes on U.S. roads last year alone, more than 109 people every day according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Drivers struck and killed more than 3,300 pedestrians in the first half of 2024, up 48 percent from a decade before. Comparatively, analysis conducted by Waymo shows that the Waymo Driver was responsible for an 81 percent reduction in crashes involving any injury and 64 percent fewer police-reported crashes. These aren’t just numbers, they’re preventable losses. It’s time to modernize how we protect people on our roads.
It is against this backdrop that AVIA is proud to join the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). GHSA is the nation’s preeminent organization representing state and territorial highway safety offices.
Partnering to Advance Safer Roads with AV Technology
This partnership is a key step in uniting innovation and public safety. GHSA brings decades of experience in road safety and enforcement advocacy to achieve their vision of zero roadway fatalities, while AVIA brings technical innovation and insight into AV deployment. Together, GHSA and AVIA can expand our efforts to build trust with the public and policymakers and also create an open channel for knowledge-sharing between engineers, safety advocates, and government officials.
Building a Safer, Smarter Roadway System
Joining GHSA opens doors for deeper collaboration on AV education and public outreach. Together, we are laying the groundwork for policies that not only accelerate innovation but also uphold the highest standards of safety.
Safety is a shared responsibility across our industry. With human error contributing to the overwhelming majority of motor vehicle crashes, AVs offer a once-in-a-generation opportunity to eliminate preventable tragedies. Our partnership with GHSA sets the stage for a future where policy and technology work together to save lives.
Together, we can ensure that AVs are integrated thoughtfully into our roadway to support smarter streets, safer communities, and stronger infrastructure.
